Challenge

The design team proposed 5/8” AGEPAN DWD in lieu of 1/2″ plywood, as the exterior sheathing of the wood-framed stud walls. AGEPAN DWD is a special wood-based fiberboard panel, manufactured from softwood fibres and a PMDI adhesive in a dry process.

Given that the proposed material has not yet gone through the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) evaluation, the Authority Having Jurisdiction requested building envelope opinion of the product for general conformity with the British Columbia Building Code (BCBC 2012).

How Did We Help?

Hamid Design Build was retained as the third party consultant to review the moisture and and thermal implications of the proposed AGEPAN sheathing. Upon conducting review of the technical documentations, and in-house testing, our team concluded that using the proposed 5/8″ AGEPAN DWD in lieu of 1/2” plywood, in the exterior wall assembly of the referenced project, will result in:

  • Improved condensation resistance
  • Slightly improved overall thermal performance
  • Satisfactory performance against exposure to incidental rain

Our sound engineering opinion has managed to satisfactorily address the requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction. Furthermore, we have been providing ongoing technical support to the builder’s team with respect to the building envelope detailing associated with the use of the AGEPAN DWD sheathing.
