Challenge

Block 1 at Sir Wilfred Grenfell Elementary School needs to go through a structural seismic upgrade, which will require alternation/replacement of some of the existing building envelope assemblies.

How Did We Help?

We offered practical and reasonable building envelope solutions in addressing the affected building envelope assemblies, with a special focus on reducing the thermal bridging and improving the thermal performance.

In our approach, we acknowledged that there are inherent limitations (such as existing construction & assemblies, access, etc.) in existing buildings that may pose challenges for the incorporation of the thermal performance improvement measures. As such, it may not always be feasible to execute and apply the same thermal performance requirements of new buildings to an existing building.

Therefore, we proposed a holistic approach that takes the building limitations into consideration, and offered reasonable solutions to address a noticeable amount of the thermal bridging within the scope of the seismic upgrade. Our proposed solutions are expected to result in a substantial reduction in the overall heat loss through the building envelope.
