Challenge
The builder was looking for a contemporary building design, and several architectural features that are not generally common in a single family detached house. The proposed design resulted in complexity of the building envelope, as well as building envelope transitions. This posed challenges in building envelope detailing, and continuity of the control layers (air barrier, vapour retarder, thermal insulation, and rain penetration control layer).
How Did We Help?
Given the complexity of the architectural design, our team took a different approach towards the building envelope assemblies of this house. All the roofs and the roof decks are designed as exterior insulated to
- Improve the thermal performance of the assemblies
- Improve the condensation resistance of the assemblies
- Make the assemblies more forgiving to deficiencies in the vapour retarder, air barrier, and incidental rain
Due to the presence of various transitions between building envelope assemblies, special attention has been given to detailing of these transitions to minimize thermal bridging. In addition, to facilitate the communication of the design intent with the construction team, our team has been developing coloured 3D step-by-step building envelope drawings.
